What Danny Glover Said to Martin Riggs Just Might Change Your Life

1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2
Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. This is often my thought pattern while I'm running. The steadiness. The flow. The focus. And then I hit a hill and I'm thrown off.No more rhythm. No more flow.Sometimes I can get right back in it. Sometimes I start sucking wind and flailing my arms like a mad woman.

Or, even worse, I'll hit that hill and my music will abandon me. Rob Bailey slows it down and gets all dope and poetic on me. And it's just truth.

The beat is gone. And I'm forced to come face to face with the will of my soul.

1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

Because in that stillness- that space between the notes, the pause when the world is holding its breath- I am being asked the question that all Creatives, all Visionaries, all Dreamers, all Lovers will be asked time and time again:

"How badly do you want it?"

I wish I could say that I'm victorious every time.

That I am strong enough every time.

That I BELIEVE enough every time.

But it's just not so.

Sometimes my doubts win and I slow to a walk.

Sometimes my heart wins and I will my way through.

But no matter what, I have to answer the question every single time.

Remember that scene in Lethal Weapon 4, where Riggs is trapped under water and Murtaugh is trying to find him?

All hell has broken loose and his best friend and partner will die if he can't find him.

Hope seems to be lost and Murtaugh comes face to face with the question of how badly he wants to save Riggs.

He could give up. He could keep looking around aimlessly.

Or he could tap into faith and something greater than himself.

And so Murtaugh says this:

"Will me, Riggs. Will me, Riggs."

And he does. He's led to the water, jumps in, and slashed his friend.

That's what I say to my heart in those moments.

Will me.

Before the beat drops.

When I am given the opportunity to come face to face with my demons.

When I am asked to believe.

1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

Will me.

Who are you when it's easy? When you're in a relationship with someone you adore... When your dreams are coming true... When you're listening to Rob Bailey during a conditioning session or on a run or you're mid-set on a new PR... When your business is finally going the way you desire...

In the stillness...

And the beat gets slow... And the world goes quiet... And your racing heart is the only thing you can feel...

And you're dying for the rhythm. For the inspiration. For the next dramatic experience to ensnare your soul.

And then. Nothing.

It's just you. No wonderment. No beat. Just you.

Who are you then?

Do you give up?

Do you give in?

Do you start a fight with your lover just for some passion?

Do you stop sharing your message, your art, just to subconsciously put yourself right back into the adrenaline junkie cycle?

Do you let Resistance have its way with you and convince you that you're not ready, it's too heavy, you need to go back to the drawing board, you don't trust people anyways so why bother even being in a relationship...?

Who are you before the beat drops?

When you're all alone and the only thing that can keep you moving forward is YOU.

Your devotion. Your love. Your heart. Your breath. You.

1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.
